Yes, I definitely had about two or three ARC's that I did not get to read in time for their release day last month. Again, I apologize to the authors.
The Secret Cause was another ARC I was not able to squeeze in to have my review out by release day. This book is the third installment of the Jennifer Morgan series. I have read the previous two and enjoyed them, that is why I wanted to read this book also.
This is another PI assignment of Miss Morgan. This is a case of a missing person. The police did not solve the case so the missing person's roommate asked the help of Miss Morgan's PI firm.
This book contained the trademark of Mr. E. Jones --surprises and twists. For this one, I did not expect that it was very simple, may even be a cheesy one but I think it was okay. I think the first two books were more adrenaline-inducing than this. In this book, thankfully, Miss Morgan did not commit her usual mistake of making an impulse decision to put herself in danger. This time she had enough sense to keep herself out of the firing range.
As expected, Miss Morgan again displayed her talent for delving into unlikely situations and getting out the truth from the people involved. She definitely has a natural knack for solving cases in her own way. Her instincts are always on the mark.
I give this book 3.5/5 fortune cookies. Though the scope of Miss Morgan's investigations have become wider and has now involved more complicated characters but found it not as absorbing as the first two books. I was entertained but not as much. I was expecting more punch which did not come at all.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have been a beta reader/reviewer for all three books in the Jennifer Morgan series, as well as several in the Justin Hall series. As such, I received an advance copy of the manuscript at no cost to me, and I understood that I would write a review on . However, I received no other compensation, and the ideas expressed are my own.
As other reviewers have said, this is the third novel in the Jennifer Morgan series. It continues the threads begun in the two earlier novels, and though this one can be read as a stand-alone, it makes more sense if you have read the two earlier books. There are two principle threads Jennifer's growth out of an attempt to start a small advertising business into a fledgling private investigator; and the continuing angst in her romantic relationship with a male New York Police Department officer. The series, so far, represents a crossover between the romantic and thriller genres. Like another reviewer, I was skeptical at first as to whether this would work. I am happy to say that though the romantic thread remains, Jennifer's career as a developing PI leads her into some hair raising adventures, and thus the thriller element grows. Not only that, but the adventures themselves, as is so often the case in the Justin Hall and Carrie O'Connor series, touch on interesting contemporary issues--in this case, the threat of technology espionage and theft. This sort of thing is what the author does best, I think, though the romantic thread appears to reach a satisfactory resolution as well.
My bottom line is that I think The Secret Cause is easily the best of the series--a very well done cross-genre work.

This is a continuation of an exciting new series by Ethan Jones. He knows how to weave a plot to keep the reader on the book. I read it in 2 hours and am not disappointed.
“The Secret Cause” is the third book in the Jennifer Morgan series. This book can be read as a standalone, but you will enjoy it more if you have read the first two books. It does end in a soft cliffhanger for the next book. There is some violence. Even though the storyline is fairly predictable, I enjoyed the book. I look forward to reading more of this series.
Clever the way the plot involves both Jennifer as a PI and links her case into one of James as the official police. Jennifer is full of doubts and insecurities and is verging on neurotic in her need to protect and lend assistance to her well trained fiancé, however it does seem to work and he doesn't think she is over involved. She has yet to learn to trust him to look after himself. Some tough moral issues are coming for James as he steps over the line to avenge wrong doing against Jennifer. I can't wait to see how the next book develops.
I first encountered Ethan Jones through the Justin Hall Series. Jennifer Morgan is different, focused on a handful of characters in New York City. In the previous two stories, Jennifer finds herself drawn into events not of her own making. In this book, she is a much more active participant.
There is more action in this story, and Jennifer seems more confident and capable in her role as an investigator. James Harris, a NYPD Detective has a larger role in this novel, and his perspective and adventures are an excellent balance to Jennifer's approach to uncovering the mysteries at hand.
I enjoy Ethan Jones' narrations and his characters are interesting, down to earth people. I was a bit skeptical at the "romantic suspense" tagline, and normally I would steer clear of a romance novel. This book was really fun, and worth the read. While it maintains the relationship between Jennifer and James as a central theme, this is nothing of the erotic about it.
